Surface Preparation

Surface should be clean and free of dirt, wax, grease and oil and all other impurities using one or a combination of the following methods: detergent wash, solvent wiping or steam cleaning. The substrate must be dried before coating. If present, surface salt should be removed by high-pressure fresh water wash. All loose particles, rust and rust scale on metals should be removed by scraper, steel brush and water jetting. To obtain maximum performance for metal surfaces, steel substrate must be primed with Navimar Alkyd Primer, galvanised steel primed with Navimar Galvanised Primer, and wood surfaces primed with Navimar Wood Primer.

Priming, Mixing, Thinning

Navilac Alkyd Enamel is a single-component product supplied at proper application viscosity. Before coating, the entire can must be power mixed to obtain a smooth, homogeneous condition. Thinning is not normally required or desired; however, at extreme environmental conditions, small amounts (10% or less by volume) of T-5 thinner can be added depending on local VOC and air quality regulations. Excessive thinning can cause low film thickness, sagging and other film defects.

Application

Navilac Alkyd Enamel should not be applied when relative humidity exceeds 85% or the difference between surface temperature and dew point is less than 3°C. The recommended method is air spray or brush. For air spray, use a Graco #800 gun with a 0.070″ or larger fluid tip and a 03-04 air cap, or equivalent. Adjust fluid and air pressure to achieve a good spray pattern. For airless spray, any Graco air, electric or gas-operated airless spray capable of 200 bar and supporting 0.070″–0.090″ tip size can be used. Prior to application, rinse equipment with Navimar T-5 thinner. When using conventional air spray, use the lowest air pressure that will achieve good atomisation to minimise overspray. Apply the material in one wet coat overlapping each pass 50%. Special attention should be given to all edges, pits, welds, corners, rivets and all other rough spots to ensure complete coverage. When coating in enclosed areas, forced ventilation must be used to help remove solvent fumes, aid coating film drying and create a safer environment for the worker.

Precaution

Refer to material safety data sheet of the product. Additional safety information is available upon request. Minimum safety precautions in dealing with the paints are;

• Take precaution to avoid skin and eye contact (i.e. gloves, goggles, face mask, barrier creams, etc.)
• Provide adequate ventilation.
• If the product comes in contact with the skin, wash thoroughly with lukewarm water and soap or suitable industrial cleaner. If the eyes are contaminated flush with water (minimum 10 minutes) and obtain medical attention at once.
• Since these products contain flammable materials, keep away from sparks and open flames. No smoking should be permitted in the area.
• Observe all precautionary notices on containers.
