RECOMMENDED USES

This fast-dry primer provides the wetting properties necessary for bonding to hand and power tool cleaned surfaces. It can be used as a shop primer for fabricated steel or a general purpose metal primer.

Surface Preparation

Surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry and free of oil, grease, dust, flaky rust, mill scale, loose paint, chalk, mildew and other foreign matter that could interfere with adhesion. Glossy surfaces should be dulled by abrading.

Metal: Remove loose rust and scale with a scraper, wire brush or sandpaper. Clean bare metal with mineral spirits.

Mildew: If mildew is present, remove by scrubbing with a commercial mildew wash. If widespread, use power wash equipment. Use rubber gloves, work goggles and protective clothing when applying mildew wash.

WARNING: If you scrape, sand or remove old paint, you may release lead dust. Lead is toxic. Exposure to lead dust can cause serious illness, especially in children. Pregnant women should also avoid exposure. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator. Clean up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop.

Mixing and Thinning

Stir thoroughly before and occasionally during use. Do not thin. New surfaces should be fully primed; previously painted surfaces may be primed or spot primed as necessary. For best hiding results, tint the primer to the approximate shade of the finish coat.

• Metal surfaces (rust-free): 1 coat Rapid Alkyd Metal Primer + appropriate Alkyd or Latex finish coat.
• Metal surfaces (rusted): 2 coats Rapid Alkyd Metal Primer + appropriate Alkyd or Latex finish coat.
• Galvanised metal: Not recommended.
• Repaint, all substrates: Prime bare areas with primer.

Application

For best results, apply generously from unpainted into painted areas. One coat protects and preserves; two coats provide greater durability.

Spray (conventional): Do not thin. Spray (airless): Fluid pressure 2,000–2,500 PSI; tip 0.011″–0.015″ orifice.

Contains petroleum distillates, Stoddard solvent. Harmful or fatal if swallowed. Causes irritation to eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Contains crystalline silica which can cause cancer when in respirable form (spray mist or sanding dust). Repeated or prolonged exposure to organic solvents may lead to permanent brain and nervous system damage. Keep away from heat and flame. Use only with adequate ventilation. Vapours are heavier than air and may travel along the ground and be ignited by pilot lights, flames, sparks, heaters or static discharge. Do not breathe vapours, spray mist or sanding dust. Avoid contact with eyes and prolonged skin contact. Wear eye protection and gloves. First aid: if affected by inhalation, move to fresh air. In case of eye contact, flush immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and call a physician. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting — get medical attention immediately.
